FLCA Volunteer Opportunities
We Need Volunteers!
Small but mighty! The work of the FLCA is carried out by a small group of hardworking volunteers primarily focusing on the work of the Board, liaising with other organizations, managing the EWM and organizing events.
Why volunteer?
This is your lake! It provides us all with so much beauty and enjoyment – give back by helping the FLCA preserve it for current and future generations to continue enjoying it. Like most organizations, we tend to have the same small group of people volunteering their time and energy and we risk their burn out.
We have many opportunities…
Help to recruit new members – speak to your friends and neighbours about the work we’re doing and the benefits of membership.
Is there an event planner in you? We need help organizing social events to bring the members of the community together and to have fun. We need ideas and we need people to plan and implement!
The most intensive work is the EWM management project – assisting with locating the EWM, preparing equipment and supplies, and carrying out the many tasks associated with the harvesting in August. Over the course of the past five years, over 5,000 hours have been contributed in volunteer time solely on this project! More details re tasks and schedules will be sent out to members during the planning process.
Participating in the water level monitoring project commencing with the 2019 season in partnership with the SSEA. More details as to what this entails to come.

Volunteers Needed for the EWM Harvest!
Sign up now to help out over the two harvest weekends August 17-19 and 24-26!
It’s time to work on harvesting the Eurasian Watermilfoil! A small, very hardworking group of volunteers on our EWM Committee has spent countless hours since January planning, working on the FLCA’s pontoon boats, contracting the divers, obtaining and modifying equipment and supplies in preparation for the our biggest control effort over two weekends August 17-19 and August 24-26.
It’s time for the rest of the community to please step up and help for the future of our lake! These two weekends are critical to our battle against this aggressive aquatic plant and are also critical to our grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. If we don’t continue the battle against the EWM it won’t matter what the water level is!
Over these two weekends we will focus on harvesting in four of the worst areas (pioneer colony on the southwest side of the lake,slalom ski course area near the pioneer colony, and two offshore areas off Lakeview Crescent and Timcourt).
An overview of the tasks that we need help with include the following:
Light duties:
* assisting with setting up and serving refreshments and lunch at the base camp on the Sweenie farm
* skimming the water in kayak or small boat for plant fragments
Heavier duties: (must be capable and comfortable doing some repetitive tasks requiring some weight)
* assisting on a team with the DASH mechanical harvesting of weeds
* assisting on a team (on pontoon boat) to apply benthic (burlap) mats to the weeds
It’s estimated that we need at least 20 volunteers per day assuming each volunteer can contribute half a day. More than that would be wonderful and much appreciated!
